Description
The Pleomassariaceae family consists of ascomycetous fungi that are recognized in plant pathology for their role in causing necrotic lesions on various woody plants. These fungi frequently colonize the bark and underlying tissue, leading to the disruption of water and nutrient transport systems within the host plant.
These fungi typically act as wound parasites or weak pathogens, inducing diseases known as cankers or bark necrosis. By infecting specific woody species, they impede the plant's physiological functions, which is particularly detrimental to high-value fruit trees and ornamental landscaping.
The visual symptoms of an infection include distinct discolored, sunken areas on the bark surface. As the disease progresses, these sites develop small, black, eruptive fruiting bodies called pseudothecia. Eventually, the bark becomes brittle and may crack or peel away, leading to the dieback of shoots and whole branches.
The development and dispersal of Pleomassariaceae are heavily dependent on environmental humidity and temperature. Rainfall and wind play a crucial role in spreading fungal spores from infected deadwood and debris to fresh, susceptible wounds on healthy trees, especially during damp spring months.
The economic damage caused by these pathogens ranges from reduced vitality and poor harvest yield to the total loss of ornamental value in trees. To manage and prevent the spread of Pleomassariaceae, experts recommend the following measures:
- Systematic removal of dead or infected branches through sanitary pruning.

- Improvement of airflow and light penetration in the tree canopy.
