Description

The disease known as Pleosphaerulina leaf spot is caused by the fungus Pleosphaerulina rosicola. This pathogen specifically targets plants within the Rosa genus, leading to foliage damage. The fungus survives the dormant winter months in infected fallen leaves or stems, acting as the primary inoculum source for the following growing season.

The primary symptom is the appearance of small, brown, or necrotic spots on the rose leaves. As the infection progresses, the center of these spots may exhibit reproductive structures of the fungus, appearing as tiny black dots. Under high humidity conditions, these spots may coalesce, causing significant yellowing (chlorosis) and early leaf abscission.

The development of Pleosphaerulina rosicola is heavily dependent on moisture. Prolonged wet weather, high atmospheric humidity, and moderate temperatures provide ideal conditions for spore germination and colonization of rose tissues.
