Pleosporales represent the largest order of fungi within the class Dothideomycetes, encompassing a diverse array of plant pathogens responsible for significant agricultural and horticultural diseases. These fungi are characterized by the production of pseudothecia and are capable of parasitizing a vast range of plant tissues, leading to severe disruptions in plant development and physiological health.

Many common and destructive diseases, such as leaf blights, spots, and rots caused by genera like Alternaria or Helminthosporium, fall under this order. These pathogens attack major crops including cereals, potatoes, oilseed rape, and various fruit trees. Their ability to survive as saprotrophs on decaying plant debris makes them particularly persistent and difficult to eradicate from farming environments.

The visual symptoms of a Pleosporales infection usually begin as small, discolored lesions that expand into dark, necrotic spots. In many cases, these spots develop concentric rings and are often accompanied by a distinct, dark-colored mycelial or conidial growth on the leaf surface. Without intervention, these localized spots can quickly coalesce, leading to rapid tissue death and significant reduction in crop yield.

Environmental conditions characterized by high humidity and moderate temperatures are ideal for the development and spread of these fungi. Spores are primarily dispersed through wind, water splashes, and agricultural machinery. The infection cycle often begins in the early spring, with primary inoculum originating from infested crop residues remaining in the soil from the previous season.
