In the context of agricultural and forest pathology, it is recognized as a saprotrophic organism rather than a plant disease, as it primarily functions as a decomposer of decaying wood rather than an active parasite of living crops.
The causative agent of wood degradation is the mycelial network, which produces enzymes capable of breaking down lignocellulose structures. This activity leads to the development of white rot, effectively recycling nutrients locked within woody materials back into the forest soil profile.
The primary hosts for this fungus are dead or dying conifer woods, particularly spruce and fir. It thrives in environments where large amounts of logging residue, fallen logs, or stumps are present, making its distribution heavily dependent on the availability of decaying woody matter.
Recognizable symptoms include the softening of wood fibers and the emergence of distinct, shelf-like white fruit bodies that lack stipes. These fruit bodies typically grow in clusters on the substrate, indicating that the mycelium has successfully established a robust feeding colony within the wood.
