As pycnidial fungi, they reproduce by forming pycnidia, which act as resilient structures during harsh conditions, allowing the pathogen to persist in infected plant debris for extended periods. Understanding the biology of this organism is essential for effective disease management.
The host range of Pleurophoma includes a variety of woody plants, vines, and specific field crops. The pathogen typically attacks the bark, stems, and leaves of the host, disrupting nutrient and water transport systems. If left unchecked, the infection can spread throughout the plant, causing systemic decline and potentially leading to the death of the infected specimen or significant yield reduction.
Symptoms of Pleurophoma infection often begin as small, discolored spots on stems or foliage. As the disease progresses, these lesions expand, often becoming sunken or necrotic.
