Plicaria is a genus of fungi belonging to the family Pezizaceae. While primarily known as saprotrophic organisms that decompose organic matter in the soil, certain conditions in greenhouses and nursery environments allow these fungi to negatively impact plant health. They are often classified as opportunistic pathogens that thrive in unstable or overly humid agricultural substrates.
The causative agent involves the development of apothecia (cup-shaped fruiting bodies) which release spores. This disease is typically characterized as a soil-borne disturbance that creates an adverse microenvironment for young plants. The fungus colonizes the surface layers of the soil, potentially affecting the rhizosphere dynamics and nutrient uptake capabilities of seedlings.
Crops most susceptible to these environmental disruptions include greenhouse vegetables, nursery-grown woody plants, and container-grown ornamentals. The presence of these fungi often indicates improper soil management practices, such as excessive moisture, poor drainage, or a lack of proper aeration within the plant containers or growing beds.
Symptoms of infestation are identified by the appearance of characteristic brown, cup-like fungal structures on the soil surface near the plant base. Infected plants often exhibit symptoms such as chlorosis, wilting during peak sunlight hours, and stunted growth. These signs occur because the fungal mycelium can alter the soil structure and compete with the root system for vital resources.
