Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Ploioderma cedri, which specifically targets cedar species. This pathogen is a type of needle cast fungus, meaning it disrupts the tree's health by causing premature shedding of the needles, which eventually leads to canopy thinning and reduced overall vitality of the affected plants.
It primarily affects various cedar cultivars, particularly in nurseries and plantations where trees are planted closely together. Although it can affect mature trees, it is often most devastating in young cedar stands, where severe defoliation can hinder the growth and development of the saplings.
The characteristic symptoms include the browning or yellowing of the needles, which is often followed by the appearance of dark, elongated fruiting bodies (apothecia) on the surface of the needle. These fungal structures break through the needle epidermis and release spores that spread the infection during wet weather conditions.
The development and spread of Ploioderma cedri are heavily reliant on cool, damp, and stagnant air conditions. High humidity levels are essential for spore germination. Therefore, locations with poor air circulation or areas prone to long-lasting moisture on the foliage are at a much higher risk of outbreak.
Effective protection measures involve a combination of sanitation and chemical control. Removing fallen needles is critical, as they serve as the primary reservoir for the fungus. Additionally, applying copper-based fungicides during the early spring growth phase helps protect new needles. Proper site selection, spacing, and pruning to improve airflow remain the most important cultural practices for prevention.
