The fungal pathogen Ploioderma lethale is an ascomycete responsible for a serious needle cast disease affecting various pine species. This fungus specifically targets the needles, leading to chlorosis, necrosis, and premature defoliation, which severely compromises the physiological state of the host tree.

This disease primarily impacts Pinus species, with a particular affinity for young plantations and forest nurseries where environmental conditions often favor fungal growth. While it can occur in mature stands, it is most devastating in younger trees that have less resilience to sustained photosynthetic loss.

Symptoms typically begin with the appearance of yellow or light brown spots on needles. A defining characteristic of Ploioderma lethale infection is the development of linear, dark brown to black fruiting bodies along the length of the infected needle, which differentiate this disease from other common pine needle casts.

Disease progression is highly dependent on environmental variables, specifically prolonged periods of high humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures.
