Description
Plowrightia is a genus of fungi belonging to the Ascomycota phylum, notorious for causing significant disease in woody plants. The most well-known species, Plowrightia morbosa, is the causal agent of the black knot disease, which primarily affects trees in the Prunus genus, such as plums, cherries, and apricots. This fungus is highly destructive and can lead to structural damage and the eventual death of infected limbs.
The pathogen thrives by colonizing the woody tissues of its host. The infection typically enters the tree through wounds, pruning cuts, or insect-damaged bark. Once inside, the fungus stimulates abnormal cell growth, causing the woody tissue to swell and develop into a characteristic knot. This process disrupts the plant's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients to the distal parts of the tree.
Symptoms of the disease are easily recognizable due to the formation of dark, crusty, and hard outgrowths on twigs and branches. As the disease progresses, these knots expand, eventually becoming elongated and black, resembling charred wood. Foliage beyond the point of infection often yellows and wilts as the branch gradually loses its ability to sustain itself, eventually leading to branch dieback.
The development and spread of Plowrightia are favored by wet, humid conditions and moderate temperatures, particularly during the spring. Ascospores are released during wet weather and can be easily dispersed by wind and rain splashes to new, susceptible tissue on healthy trees. Older, neglected orchards or wild Prunus stands often act as persistent reservoirs for the inoculum.
Management and prevention focus on sanitation and chemical intervention. The most critical control method is the physical removal of all infected branches, which should be cut well below the visible knot and immediately destroyed or burned. Furthermore, regular fungicide applications in early spring, combined with maintaining good tree vigor through balanced fertilization, significantly reduce the risk of successful infection.
