Specifically, species such as Pochonia chlamydosporia are classified as nematophagous fungi, meaning they naturally parasitize and suppress populations of plant-parasitic nematodes.
The biological mode of action involves the fungus colonizing the eggs, cysts, and juveniles of nematodes. Upon contact, the fungus utilizes specialized enzymes such as proteases and chitinases to penetrate the eggshell, effectively preventing the development of the larvae and significantly reducing the reproductive potential of the pest.
This biological agent targets a wide variety of crops susceptible to soil-borne nematode infections. Primary beneficiaries include vegetable crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, as well as various tubers and fruit crops. Its application is particularly effective in greenhouse environments where nematode pressure can be intense and persistent.
