Description

Podoscypha is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Polyporales, which act as agents of wood decay. These fungi are primarily known for causing structural degradation in woody plants, leading to significant economic losses in forestry and the decline of ornamental trees in urban landscapes.

The disease is caused by basidiomycete fungi that initiate white rot in living or dead wood. As a pathogen or saprotroph, the fungus penetrates the heartwood, secreting enzymes that break down the complex lignocellulosic structures, effectively hollowed out the trunk from the inside.

Trees vulnerable to Podoscypha include a variety of hardwood species. Infection is often facilitated by wounds, frost cracks, or improper pruning practices. The spores are dispersed through the air and colonize vulnerable areas where moisture levels are conducive to mycelial growth.

Visible symptoms often include the development of leathery, fan-shaped, or rosette-like basidiocarps on the bark surface, typically appearing near the base of the tree or on older branches. The internal damage is characterized by a bleaching of the wood, which becomes soft, stringy, and loses all its structural capacity to support the tree.

Management strategies focus on sanitation and preventative care. Infected trees should be removed and destroyed to prevent spore dispersal. Maintenance of tree vigor through adequate watering and fertilization is essential, as healthy trees can better compartmentalize wounds and resist fungal invasion. Using sterilized pruning equipment is a mandatory practice for preventing the spread of fungal spores between trees.
