Description
The causal agent of this condition is the fungus Podosphaera balsaminae, an obligate biotrophic pathogen. It belongs to the order Erysiphales and specializes in infecting plants of the Balsaminaceae family by developing a superficial mycelial network on the host's foliage and stems.
The primary host for this pathogen is the garden balsam (Impatiens balsamina). While it is common in home gardens, the fungus can also affect balsam species grown in commercial greenhouses, where dense planting and consistent environmental conditions provide ideal opportunities for infection.
Early symptoms include small, circular white patches on the leaves that eventually merge to cover the entire leaf surface with a powdery, white mycelium. Infected plants often show signs of stunted growth, yellowing foliage, leaf curling, and eventual necrosis of the tissues if the infection is left untreated.
The disease thrives in environments characterized by high relative humidity and moderate temperatures, often during periods with fluctuating day and night temperatures. Spores are primarily wind-dispersed, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly across dense flower beds or through greenhouse benches.
Effective management requires a combination of chemical and cultural practices. Growers should utilize fungicides containing sulfur or systemic active ingredients like myclobutanil. Cultural control involves ensuring adequate spacing between plants to improve airflow, removing infected plant debris immediately, and avoiding overhead irrigation that leaves water on the foliage.
