The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Podosphaera euphorbiae, an obligate parasite that specifically infects plants of the Euphorbiaceae family. This pathogen belongs to the Erysiphaceae family and causes the characteristic powdery mildew disease, manifesting as a white, dusty layer of mycelium and conidia on the host tissues.
The primary hosts for this fungus are various species of the genus Euphorbia. Whether grown in garden landscapes or controlled greenhouse environments, spurges are susceptible to infection during periods of active growth when the plant's cuticle is vulnerable to hyphal penetration by the fungal parasite.
Symptoms initially appear as small, circular, white patches on leaves, stems, and sometimes floral bracts. As the Podosphaera euphorbiae colony matures, these spots coalesce, covering the entire organ with a dense, powdery mass. Severe infestation leads to leaf chlorosis, distortion, curling, and eventual necrosis, significantly impacting the plant's overall health and aesthetic value.
The development of the fungus is favored by high relative humidity, poor air circulation, and moderate temperatures. The conidia are disseminated primarily by wind, allowing the pathogen to spread rapidly through a plant population. The fungus can survive the winter season as dormant mycelium or as fruiting bodies (chasmothecia) on plant debris.
