Podosphaera fuliginea is a primary fungal pathogen responsible for powdery mildew in cucurbitaceous plants. This disease commonly affects cucumbers, squashes, melons, and watermelons globally. It acts as an obligate parasite, extracting nutrients from the host tissues, which weakens the plant systemically and hampers its reproductive cycle.
The characteristic symptoms begin as small, white, powdery-like spots on the upper leaf surfaces, eventually spreading to the lower leaves, stems, and petioles. As the infection progresses, these colonies merge, causing the leaf tissue to yellow, brown, and eventually wither. In severe cases, the entire plant may appear dusted with flour, leading to rapid senescence of foliage and stunted development.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the disease cycle, with moderate temperatures and fluctuating humidity favoring spore germination. Spores are dispersed through wind currents and splashing water. High-density planting and poor ventilation in greenhouses exacerbate the problem, allowing the fungus to thrive and spread rapidly across the cultivation area.
