Description
The fungus Podosphaera leucotricha is the primary pathogen responsible for powdery mildew in apple trees. As an obligate parasite, it survives the winter primarily as dormant mycelium within the buds of infected trees, allowing for rapid colonization once growth commences in the spring.
While apple trees are the main host, the disease can also affect pears and quinces. The pathogen targets the most actively growing tissues, including terminal shoots, blossom clusters, and young leaves, causing stunted growth and reproductive failure in severe cases.
Early symptoms appear as small, whitish-gray powdery patches on the leaves. As the infection progresses, this mycelial growth spreads to cover entire shoots and buds. Infected leaves often become brittle, curled, and discolored, eventually leading to premature senescence and leaf drop.
Favorable conditions for the development of Podosphaera leucotricha include mild temperatures and high humidity, though rainfall is not strictly necessary for secondary spore spread. Dry, warm weather can actually facilitate the dispersal of conidia by wind, contributing to rapid disease outbreaks throughout the orchard.
The economic impact of powdery mildew is substantial, particularly due to the loss of vegetative vigor and potential yield reduction. Infected fruit often develop a distinct russeting pattern, which significantly decreases their marketability and shelf life, causing long-term damage to the tree's overall health.
