The causal agent of this widespread plant disease is the fungus Podosphaera pannosa. It is an obligate parasite belonging to the Erysiphaceae family, which colonizes the surface of host plants, extending specialized structures called haustoria into the plant cells to extract nutrients.
This pathogen primarily targets Rosaceae species, with roses, peaches, and nectarines being the most susceptible crops. The infection can lead to severe aesthetic damage in ornamental rose gardens and cause significant yield losses and tree decline in orchards, particularly affecting nursery stock and young vegetative growth.
Symptoms typically begin with white, powdery spots on young leaves, stems, and flower buds. As the infection progresses, this white fungal mycelium covers larger areas, turning greyish or brownish. Common consequences include leaf curling, premature leaf drop, stunted shoot growth, and the failure of buds to bloom properly.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of Podosphaera pannosa. High humidity combined with warm, fluctuating temperatures during the day and night are ideal for spore germination and colony expansion. Poor air circulation in greenhouse environments or densely planted garden beds significantly aggravates the intensity of the disease.
Management strategies involve a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Maintaining plant vigor through proper fertilization, avoiding overhead irrigation, and pruning to improve air circulation are essential preventive measures. When infection occurs, applying chemical fungicides such as sulfur-based products or systemic fungicides is necessary to manage the outbreak effectively.
