Description
Polypore refers to a large group of basidiomycete fungi responsible for significant tree diseases characterized by stem and root rot. As wood-decay fungi, they act as parasites that enzymatically break down the structural integrity of a tree's internal tissues. The pathogen typically enters the host through pruning wounds, bark injuries, or cold-induced cracks, leading to internal decay.
The host range for polypores is extensive, commonly affecting deciduous fruit trees like apples, pears, and plums, as well as various ornamental and forest species. These fungi are particularly dangerous because they can colonize both young and old trees, often remaining undetected until the structural damage becomes severe.
The primary diagnostic sign of a polypore infection is the presence of the fungus's perennial fruiting bodies (conks) on the trunk or branches. These bodies are often tough and woody in texture. Internal symptoms are harder to spot but include branch dieback, crown thinning, and a hollow sound when the trunk is struck, indicating a significant loss of internal heartwood.
Polypore development is favored by high humidity and the presence of exposed woody surfaces that serve as entry points for fungal spores. Spores are dispersed through wind and water, landing on vulnerable areas. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the vascular system, slowly consuming the cellulose and lignin that provide the tree with stability.
The impact of this disease is highly detrimental, as it compromises the structural stability of the tree, leading to windthrow or branch failure. Because internal decay is often irreversible, management focuses on prevention rather than cure. This includes maintaining optimal tree health through fertilization, proper pruning practices, covering fresh wounds with protective sealants, and promptly removing and destroying infected timber to prevent further spore dispersal.
