Description
The northern polypore (Climacocystis borealis, synonym Polyporus borealis) is a significant wood-decaying fungus that causes white rot in coniferous species. As a facultative parasite and saprotroph, it penetrates the tree through wounds or root damage, gradually decomposing the interior wood structure and compromising the tree's overall stability.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include spruce and fir trees. While it frequently targets old-growth forests, it can also manifest in younger stands if the trees are already stressed by environmental factors, drought, or physical injury to the bark or root system.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as annual, fleshy, white-to-cream-colored sporocarps emerging near the base of the trunk or at points of stem damage. As these fruiting bodies mature, they harden and may become brittle, serving as clear indicators of internal decay within the affected host.
The disease spreads primarily through airborne spores released from the fruiting bodies. Development is favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures, which are common in boreal and temperate forests. Once the spores germinate on a wounded surface, the mycelium rapidly colonizes the xylem, facilitating the progression of the wood rot.
The detrimental impact of Polyporus borealis includes significant losses in timber quality and increased susceptibility of trees to windthrow. Effective management requires maintaining stand hygiene, including the prompt removal of infected timber and stumps, as well as cautious forest operations to prevent avoidable bark and root damage that serves as entry points for the fungus.
