Umbrella polypore (Polyporus umbellatus) is a fungal pathogen known to cause root rot in various hardwood tree species. While it is often studied as a medicinal resource, in the context of arboriculture and forestry, it is recognized as a parasitic agent that targets the root system and base of the host tree, leading to progressive physiological decline.

The host range of Polyporus umbellatus primarily includes deciduous trees, with oak, beech, and maple being the most common targets. The fungus infects the host through wounds or direct root-to-root contact in the soil, initiating decay that impacts the tree's structural integrity and its ability to absorb water and essential nutrients from the substrate.

Symptoms of an infestation are often observed at the base of the tree. The development of distinct, clustered, umbrella-like fruiting bodies is the most prominent indicator of the disease. Above-ground symptoms include crown thinning, leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, and a gradual dieback of branches, which indicates that the root rot has significantly damaged the plant's vascular system.

Environmental conditions favoring the growth of this pathogen include poorly drained, compacted soils and high levels of organic debris near the root collar. The fungus can persist in the soil for several years, slowly spreading its mycelial network to adjacent healthy trees, which often results in the formation of disease pockets within forested or landscaped areas.

Effective management requires early detection and strict sanitation practices. It is crucial to remove dead or severely infected trees, including the complete extraction of stump and root systems to prevent further mycelial spread. Improving soil aeration and managing site moisture levels are effective preventative steps to reduce the suitability of the environment for this fungal pathogen.
