The primary hosts of this pathogen are cultivated mushroom species, such as Agaricus bisporus. The fungus attacks the mushroom mycelium and developing fruit bodies, directly impeding growth and causing significant losses in yield and quality, which forces growers to implement rigorous biosecurity measures to protect their crops.
Symptoms of the disease typically begin with the appearance of localized patches that are often velvety or slightly fluffy in texture. These spots initially appear white but may turn greyish or brownish as the fungus matures. Over time, the affected area becomes necrotic, leading to the softening of the tissue and subsequent decay of the mushroom fruit bodies.
