Polystomella is a genus of ascomycete fungi known to cause significant foliage damage in various plant species. This pathogen invades the leaf tissues, disrupting their physiological functions and causing aesthetic and structural harm. It is a persistent disease that, if left untreated, can compromise the vigor of ornamental shrubs and several woody crop varieties.
The host range of this fungal disease primarily includes species prone to leaf spot infections. Once the fungal spores settle on the leaf surface, they penetrate the epidermis and begin feeding on the internal tissues. This biological activity prevents the plant from performing photosynthesis efficiently, eventually leading to chlorosis and tissue necrosis.
