Polythrincium is a genus of fungi causing notable diseases in plants, specifically Polythrincium trifolii, which is responsible for the dark leaf spot of clover. This fungus is an obligate parasite that significantly impacts the physiological processes of host plants, leading to a reduction in both biomass and overall crop health.
The primary host range includes various clover species (Trifolium spp.). The disease is globally distributed, particularly affecting forage fields in regions with moderate temperatures and high humidity. While it rarely causes total crop failure, it reduces the yield and nutritional quality of the forage, which is critical for livestock production.
The characteristic symptoms appear as small, brownish-black, slightly raised spots on the underside and upper surface of the leaves.
