Clover black blotch is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Polythrincium trifolii, which specifically targets various species of clover. It is considered one of the common foliar diseases that can negatively affect the quality and quantity of forage production, significantly reducing the protein content in harvested hay.

The disease is identified by the appearance of numerous small, black, spot-like eruptions on the upper surfaces of the leaflets. These black patches consist of dense clusters of conidia. As the infection progresses, affected leaves turn yellow or brown, wither, and eventually drop off prematurely, leading to a noticeable reduction in plant vigor.

The development of Polythrincium trifolii is favored by cool, wet weather, which promotes the dispersal of spores via splashing rain and wind currents. Dense, thick stands of clover are particularly susceptible, as the canopy traps humidity, creating an ideal microenvironment for the fungus to multiply and spread across the field during the growing season.
