Pine conk (Porodaedalea pini) is a perennial fungal pathogen that primarily affects the heartwood of coniferous trees. It is a major cause of stem decay, leading to significant economic losses in the forestry sector by rendering timber unfit for construction or industrial processing.

The fungus has a wide host range, including various pine species, spruce, fir, and larch. Infection typically occurs through open wounds, broken branches, or frost cracks, which provide an entry point for basidiospores to germinate and colonize the inner wood of the tree trunk.

Symptoms are manifested by the growth of perennial, woody, hoof-shaped conks on the surface of the bark. These fruiting bodies are dark brown or black on top with distinct concentric zones, while the underside consists of a porous, brown hymenium. Internally, the fungus causes advanced wood rot.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity and the presence of older, stressed stands favor the development of this fungus. The pathogen spreads via airborne spores that land on exposed wood surfaces, where the fungal mycelium begins to break down complex organic polymers like lignin and cellulose.
