Poronia punctata, commonly known as the nail fungus, is an ascomycete fungus that thrives on the dung of herbivorous animals, particularly horses. While it is not a plant pathogen, it is a significant organism in the agricultural landscape, acting as a natural decomposer and a bioindicator of ecosystem health.
The fungus functions as a saprotroph, specifically a coprophilous one, meaning it is restricted to an environment composed of animal waste. It utilizes enzymes to break down the remnants of digested plant fibers, playing a vital role in nutrient cycling within pasture soils. Its biological development is strictly synchronized with the availability of organic manure.
In terms of agricultural impact, Poronia punctata does not affect crops directly. Instead, it serves as an indicator of pasture management quality. Its presence suggests a low reliance on intensive veterinary parasiticides, as many chemical dewormers for livestock have proven toxic to this specific fungus, leading to its global decline.
The visual characteristics include the development of stromatic fruiting bodies that look like small, stalked discs or nails. The upper surface is white-greyish, punctured by dark ostioles (small openings) that appear as black dots, releasing spores into the environment. These fruiting bodies typically appear in clusters on old, stable dung piles.
