The Porpidiaceae family consists of lichens that typically occupy epilithic niches, meaning they grow on rocks and inorganic substrates. It is essential to clarify that these organisms are not plant diseases; they do not parasitize crops, nor do they cause any phytopathological issues in agricultural production systems.
The biological complex is composed of an ascomycete fungus and a photobiont, usually a green alga. They develop specialized fruiting bodies known as lecideine apothecia. These structures are adapted to capture moisture from the air, allowing the organism to maintain metabolism even under harsh conditions on stony surfaces.
Symptoms of growth include the formation of crust-like thalli on rocks, which may vary in color depending on the species and environmental exposure. They thrive in environments where environmental stress is low, which is why they are rarely found in intensive agricultural areas subjected to heavy chemical applications.
