Description
Bitter bracket (Postia stiptica) is a wood-decaying fungus that primarily acts as a saprotroph, causing extensive brown rot in dead or decaying wood. It belongs to the group of fungi that specifically break down cellulose, leaving the lignin intact, which results in the wood fracturing into small, brittle cubes, a classic diagnostic feature of brown rot.
The host range of Postia stiptica mainly includes coniferous tree species, particularly spruce and fir. While it serves an important ecological role as a decomposer of fallen timber and stumps, it can become problematic in forestry if it colonizes damaged living trees or stored logs that are kept in conditions conducive to fungal growth.
The symptoms of infestation are marked by the appearance of white, shelf-like fruiting bodies. These sporocarps often grow in clusters and are characterized by a watery or exudating surface when fresh. As the fungus matures and dries out, it becomes firm, brittle, and takes on a yellowish or cream color. The name "bitter" comes from the very intense, unpleasant taste of the fruiting body.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of the disease. High humidity levels and temperatures between 15°C and 25°C are ideal for the rapid growth of the mycelium. The spores are typically wind-dispersed, entering the heartwood of trees through wounds, scars, or broken branches, where the fungus begins its destructive enzymatic activity.
Control and prevention strategies focus on forest hygiene and material preservation. Removing infected wood debris from forest floors helps reduce spore pressure. For industrial or residential timber, keeping the wood dry, well-ventilated, and protected from ground moisture is the most effective way to prevent colonization and ensure the structural longevity of the lumber.
