Description
Potebniamyces canker is a serious fungal disease affecting fruit trees, primarily caused by the pathogen Potebniamyces pyri. This fungus acts as a wound parasite, specializing in the destruction of the bark and cambium layers, which leads to the formation of necrotic lesions on trunks and branches of pear trees.
While the pear tree is the primary host, the disease can impact other pome fruit varieties. The fungus invades the host through bark fissures, winter injury sites, sunscald lesions, or pruning wounds. Once established, the pathogen spreads through the cortex, effectively girdling branches and interrupting the tree's vascular system.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as sunken, dark-colored areas on the bark. As the canker expands, the affected bark may crack or peel, often exposing the underlying woody tissue. In advanced stages, the leaves on the affected branch will yellow, wilt, and eventually die as the water supply to the canopy is severed.
The spread of this disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly moisture and temperature fluctuations. High humidity and cool, wet weather provide optimal conditions for spore release and colonization. Poorly maintained orchards with high tree density and lack of sunlight exposure are significantly more susceptible to outbreaks.
Effective management and prevention of the disease rely on a multi-faceted approach:
- Regular sanitation, including the pruning of infected wood well below the visible canker.
- Application of wound sealants and copper-based fungicides to pruning sites to prevent entry points.
- Maintaining optimal tree health through balanced fertilization and irrigation to improve natural resistance.
- Applying preventive dormant sprays to reduce the overall inoculum load in the orchard environment.
