Prosthemium betulinum
Description
The causative agent of birch dieback, commonly known as a type of fungal necrosis, is the ascomycete fungus Prosthemium betulinum. This pathogen targets the bark and cambium layers of birch trees. By invading the vascular tissues, it disrupts the flow of nutrients, leading to localized tissue death and structural weakness in the wood.
The fungus specifically affects birch trees (Betula species). While healthy trees possess natural defenses, the fungus frequently attacks trees already stressed by drought, soil compaction, pollution, or poor environmental conditions. It is particularly problematic in dense stands where air circulation is limited, promoting fungal development.
Typical symptoms include the development of darkened, depressed areas of bark (cankers). Over time, these areas may crack, exposing the inner wood. During the late stages of infection, minute black fruiting bodies of the fungus emerge through the bark surface, appearing as small, distinct pustules or dots.
The spread of Prosthemium betulinum is heavily dependent on moisture. Spores are disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and insects, frequently entering the tree through pruning wounds, frost cracks, or insect damage. Warm, humid weather conditions during the growing season significantly accelerate the colonization of the bark.
The impact of this disease is severe, causing progressive branch dieback and, in advanced cases, the death of the entire tree. For forestry and landscape professionals, the disease necessitates strict monitoring, as it reduces the economic value of timber and the aesthetic value of urban plantings.
Integrated disease management involves:
- Regular pruning of infected branches, ensuring cuts are made into healthy, unaffected wood.
- Sterilization of pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination between trees.
- Maintenance of tree vigor through appropriate mulching and irrigation.
- Removal and destruction of highly infected trees to reduce the overall inoculum load in the area.
