Pruniphilomyces infection is a fungal disease caused by the Pruniphilomyces genus. As a specialized pathogen, it predominantly targets various woody species, particularly those within the Rosaceae family. The disease is known for its ability to persist in plant tissues over long periods, leading to gradual physiological decline and significant economic loss for commercial growers.
The primary hosts of this pathogen include stone fruit trees such as plums, cherries, and apricots. The fungus primarily invades the tree through bark injuries, pruning cuts, or insect-damaged areas. Once inside, the pathogen colonizes the phloem and xylem, severely impairing the tree's ability to transport nutrients and water throughout the canopy.
Early symptoms include localized bark necrosis, cracking, and exudation of sap. Over time, the affected branches may show chlorosis and premature leaf drop. As the disease progresses, the tree becomes stunted, and the wood may turn brittle, eventually leading to branch dieback. Identifying these symptoms in early spring is crucial for effective containment of the infection.
The development and spread of Pruniphilomyces are heavily dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. Rain splashes and wind-borne spores contribute to the rapid dispersal of the pathogen throughout an orchard. Poor orchard sanitation and lack of air circulation in dense canopies provide the perfect breeding ground for the fungus.
Management of the disease requires a rigorous integrated pest management strategy. This includes strict adherence to sanitation practices, such as pruning infected branches and disinfecting tools between trees. Preventive applications of copper-based fungicides during the dormant season, combined with systemic treatments during the growing phase, are essential to protect the orchard and ensure healthy fruit production.
