Prymnesiophyceae are a class of haptophyte algae that play a significant role in water-related agricultural challenges, particularly in aquaculture and irrigation systems. While not a disease of terrestrial crops, they act as potent pathogens within water bodies, producing toxins that devastate fish populations and compromise the quality of agricultural water supplies.
The primary agents of concern are species like Prymnesium parvum, which produce complex exotoxins known as prymnesins. These toxins function as neurotoxins and gill-damaging agents. Once released into the water, these compounds are highly effective at disrupting the physiological balance of aquatic organisms, leading to massive die-offs in controlled environments.
Symptoms of an infestation are frequently characterized by water discoloration, often appearing yellowish or golden-brown. Biological control measures and the targeted application of approved algaecides can help manage populations.
