Prymnesium is a genus of haptophyte algae, most notably represented by Prymnesium parvum. While primarily known for causing "golden tide" events in aquaculture, this organism represents a significant threat to hydroponic systems and aquatic plant nurseries, where the water quality is critical for the survival and growth of the cultivated crops.

The pathogenicity of this organism stems from its ability to secrete potent exotoxins known as prymnesins. These substances are highly toxic, acting as membrane-disrupting agents. When these toxins accumulate in nutrient solutions or irrigation reservoirs, they cause severe physiological stress to plants, leading to systemic toxicity and growth inhibition.

Symptoms of Prymnesium-related damage include browning and necrosis of the root tips, decreased water and nutrient uptake, and overall chlorosis of the foliage. Unlike viral or fungal pathogens, this damage is chemical in nature, resulting from the interaction between the toxins and the plant's root cell membranes.

Environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of Prymnesium include elevated salinity levels, high nutrient availability (particularly phosphorus and nitrogen), and stable temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. Stagnant water systems are particularly susceptible to rapid algal blooms, which can escalate within a few days under warm, sunny conditions.

Management and protection strategies focus on maintaining high standards of water sanitation. Effective control involves continuous UV-C sterilization of the circulating water, monitoring for early signs of algal growth, and managing the nutrient load to prevent nutrient spikes. In severe cases, chemical treatments with algaecides specifically approved for the target environment may be necessary.
