Prymnesium parvum, commonly known as golden algae, is a microscopic flagellate alga that poses a severe threat to aquaculture and aquatic ecosystems. Although it is not a traditional plant pathogen in terrestrial agriculture, its impact on water quality and fish stocks makes it a critical concern for agricultural water management.
The organism acts as a primary producer of potent ichthyotoxins known as prymnesins. These toxins specifically target the gills of fish and the cell membranes of other aquatic organisms, leading to severe physiological stress, respiratory failure, and mass mortality events in aquaculture ponds and inland water bodies.
Symptoms of an infestation are typically marked by a golden or yellowish discoloration of the water column. Affected fish often show signs of lethargy, gasping at the water surface, and erratic swimming patterns before ultimately succumbing to the toxins. Mortality can affect various species, including shellfish and invertebrates.
Development and proliferation occur under specific environmental conditions, including moderate salinity, high nutrient loads (phosphorus and nitrogen), and stable, moderate temperatures.
