Psathyrellaceae is a diverse family of gilled mushrooms that primarily function as saprotrophs in soil ecosystems. While most members of this family are beneficial decomposers, in agricultural settings, their presence can sometimes signal excessive organic matter decomposition, poor drainage, or environmental conditions that favor the development of various plant pathogens.

The causal agents belong to genera such as Psathyrella and Coprinellus. Their impact is often indirect, as they act as decomposers of organic material; however, under specific stressful conditions for the host plant, their mycelium can colonize roots, leading to root rot, nutrient deficiency, and an overall reduction in crop vigor and yield quality.

Symptoms and signs of infestation include the emergence of small, fragile mushrooms near the base of the stems, the presence of fine white or greyish fungal threads in the soil, and wilting of the plants. In severe cases, the root system may become discolored and soft due to the enzymatic activity of the fungi, which hinders water and nutrient uptake.

Conditions for development and spread are characterized by high soil humidity, stagnant air in greenhouse environments, and a high concentration of fresh, uncomposted organic matter. The fungi spread rapidly through spore dispersal via air currents or water splash, thriving in dark, cool, and damp areas, which are common in poorly managed high-density cropping systems.

Measures for protection and prevention include soil sterilization or solarization in greenhouse settings, proper removal of plant debris, and improvement of soil drainage. It is also recommended to manage soil pH and avoid excessive use of fresh organic fertilizer. Fungicidal treatments should be applied only as a last resort, prioritizing cultural practices to maintain soil health.
