While primarily existing as a saprotroph within decaying organic matter, it can exhibit pathogenic characteristics, particularly in nursery environments where plants are cultivated in dense, high-moisture substrates.

The host range of this pathogen includes a variety of ornamental plants and saplings. It is especially problematic in environments where the root zones remain saturated for extended periods, providing an ideal microclimate for the fungus to transition from decomposing debris to the living root tissue of the plants.
