Cercospora leaf spot of okra

The disease known as Cercospora leaf spot is caused by the fungus Pseudocercospora abelmoschi. This pathogen is a major threat to commercial okra production worldwide, particularly in regions with high humidity and significant rainfall during the growing season.

The primary host for this fungus is okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). While it is specifically adapted to this crop, it can occasionally impact other related species in the Malvaceae family. The pathogen is highly host-specific, which makes crop rotation a fundamental strategy in its management.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, brown, angular to circular lesions on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots enlarge, often merging to cover significant leaf area. A dense, grayish-black fungal mat of conidiophores and conidia develops on the undersurface of the leaves, which is a key diagnostic feature.

Environmental conditions such as high temperatures and prolonged moisture are essential for the infection process. The fungus survives between seasons as mycelia or conidia on infected plant debris left in the field or in the soil. High humidity levels during the summer months accelerate the spread of the disease significantly.

Effective management includes the following practices:

• Removal and destruction of infected plant material at the end of the season.
• Implementation of a 2-3 year crop rotation with non-malvaceous plants.
• Application of copper-based fungicides or systemic chemical treatments during the early stages of disease development.
• Ensuring adequate spacing between plants to improve air circulation and reduce foliage wetness.

Proper monitoring is critical for success in managing this disease. Farmers should perform regular field inspections starting from the early growth stages, as early intervention prevents the secondary cycles of infection and preserves the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, ultimately securing higher yields.
