The disease is caused by the microscopic fungal pathogen Pseudocercospora arunjae. This fungus is classified as a leaf-spotting agent that infects plant tissues by colonizing the leaf lamina, disrupting the physiological balance of the plant and interfering with its photosynthetic capability.

The primary hosts for this pathogen include various species within the Myrtaceae family, notably the genus Eucalyptus. In commercial forestry and ornamental plant nurseries, this fungus can become a significant limiting factor, particularly in regions with high humidity and favorable microclimatic conditions.
