Description
The fungus Pseudocercospora chebulae is a specialized plant pathogen recognized as the primary agent of severe leaf spot disease in various Terminalia species. As an Ascomycete fungus, it colonizes the host's foliar tissues, drawing nutrients from the plant cells and disrupting essential biological processes such as transpiration and photosynthesis.
The primary host for this pathogen is Terminalia chebula, a medicinal plant of high economic value. The disease typically affects the foliage, leading to a significant reduction in leaf surface area available for energy production. This stress often manifests in weakened growth, reduced fruit yields, and increased vulnerability to secondary opportunistic pathogens or environmental stressors.
Symptoms are identified by the formation of necrotic lesions on the leaf blades. These spots usually begin as small, pale chlorotic marks that expand and darken to a brown or necrotic black color. Often, these spots are surrounded by a yellowish halo. On the abaxial surface of the leaf, a thin, grayish-brown layer of fungal conidiophores and spores becomes visible to the naked eye during humid conditions.
The epidemiology of Pseudocercospora chebulae is heavily dependent on moisture. Rain splash and high humidity facilitate the dispersal of spores from fallen leaves to the lower canopy and subsequently to the upper foliage. The pathogen survives the off-season within decaying plant debris, forming structures that allow it to persist until the next growing season when climatic conditions become conducive for infection.
Management strategies focus on reducing the inoculum density within the growing area. Pruning and removing infected foliage help significantly decrease the source of spores. In addition, implementing a consistent fungicide spray program using systemic or contact fungicides is recommended for high-value orchards. Maintaining good air circulation and plant spacing remains the most effective long-term prophylactic measure against fungal leaf spots.
