Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Pseudocercospora dendrobii, which is a specialized pathogen affecting various species of tropical orchids. This fungal infection is frequently identified in commercial orchid nurseries and private collections where environmental conditions favor the development of pathogens.

The primary host plants are orchids belonging to the Dendrobium genus. While the fungus predominantly targets the leaves, severe cases can lead to the infection of stems and pseudobulbs, significantly compromising the structural integrity and health of the orchid plant.

Symptoms initially appear as small, chlorotic spots on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, turn necrotic with a brown or black center, and may develop a yellowish halo. A visible layer of fungal spores can often be observed on the underside of the leaves in humid conditions.

The development of the fungus is heavily dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and poor air circulation. Spores are primarily disseminated through splashing water during irrigation, contaminated tools, or air currents moving through the greenhouse, facilitating rapid spread across dense collections.

The severity of the disease is significant, as it leads to reduced photosynthetic capacity and premature leaf drop. If left unmanaged, the plant undergoes chronic stress, which stunts growth, prevents flowering, and may ultimately result in the death of the specimen.

Effective management strategies include implementing strict sanitation protocols, such as cleaning pruning tools and maintaining proper spacing between plants. Control measures often require the application of systemic fungicides, alongside strict control over irrigation methods to keep foliage dry and prevent the conditions necessary for spore germination.
