Description
Pseudocercospora depazeoides is a pathogenic fungus that causes a distinct type of leaf spot disease primarily affecting plants in the genus Sambucus (elderberry). This fungus disrupts the normal physiological processes of the foliage, leading to premature senescence and tissue necrosis across infected shrubbery.
The characteristic symptoms typically manifest as small, irregular, or angular spots on the leaf surfaces. As the infection progresses, these spots turn brown or dark brown, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. In high humidity, the undersides of the leaves may exhibit a sparse, velvety fungal growth, which contains the conidia responsible for spreading the infection to neighboring leaves.
The pathogen thrives in warm and humid climates. The spread of the disease is facilitated by splashing raindrops, overhead irrigation, and wind, which transport spores from the overwintering leaf litter onto new, healthy foliage. Dense, poorly ventilated canopies significantly increase the susceptibility of the shrubs by maintaining microclimates favorable for fungal germination.
