Tomato black leaf mold, caused by the fungus Pseudocercospora fuligena, is a significant fungal disease that primarily affects tomato plants. It is a widespread pathogen known for causing severe foliage damage, which directly correlates with significant reductions in plant vigor and overall yield potential.

The disease primarily targets tomatoes, although it may occur on other solanaceous hosts. It typically begins its infection cycle on the lower leaves of the plant, progressing upwards as the humidity and temperatures remain favorable for the pathogen. Once established, the disease can quickly become a systemic issue within the crop canopy.

Initial symptoms present as subtle chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surfaces. As the infection advances, these spots evolve into irregular, dark, sooty-looking lesions on the underside of the leaves, which correspond to the sporulation structures of the fungus. Affected leaves eventually become necrotic, wither, and abscise, leading to premature defoliation of the crop.

Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of Pseudocercospora fuligena development. The fungus thrives in warm, humid climates, especially when temperatures remain between 20°C and 28°C and moisture persists on the foliage. High humidity within greenhouse environments or prolonged periods of leaf wetness in open fields significantly accelerate the infection rate.

Management strategies must focus on both preventive cultural practices and chemical interventions. Key measures include removing and disposing of infected plant debris to reduce inoculum sources, improving aeration within greenhouses to lower humidity, and implementing a strict fungicide rotation program. Utilizing resistant cultivars remains the most effective long-term solution for mitigating the impact of this disease.
