Pseudocercospora hedyotidis is a fungal plant pathogen responsible for causing leaf spot disease in various species of the Rubiaceae family, primarily within the Hedyotis genus. As a member of the Pseudocercospora genus, this fungus is characterized by its ability to cause necrotic lesions on foliage, which can lead to significant aesthetic and physiological damage to host plants.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are plants of the genus Hedyotis, including those used in horticultural and medicinal applications. While the disease may appear insignificant in small quantities, severe outbreaks in nursery settings or greenhouses can lead to defoliation, stunted growth, and in some cases, the death of highly susceptible specimens.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, irregular or circular spots on the leaf surface. Initially appearing as chlorotic dots, these lesions gradually expand, turning brown or dark reddish-brown as the tissue undergoes necrosis. In humid conditions, a velvety, olive-green fungal growth, representing the conidiophores and conidia of Pseudocercospora hedyotidis, appears on the underside of the leaves.

Development and spread of the pathogen are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly humidity and temperature. Optimal conditions include high ambient humidity (above 80%) and temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. Free moisture on leaf surfaces serves as the primary medium for spore germination and infection, often occurring during periods of heavy rainfall, fog, or poor greenhouse ventilation.

Management of the disease involves a combination of cultural practices and chemical intervention. Growers should prioritize improving plant spacing and airflow to reduce leaf wetness duration. Sanitation is critical, including the immediate removal and destruction of infected plant debris to minimize primary inoculum. Where necessary, the application of preventative fungicides—particularly those effective against Ascomycota—can mitigate spread and protect new foliage.
