Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Pseudocercospora ixorae, a specialized pathogen that targets various species of the Ixora genus. As a leaf spot fungus, it disrupts the physiological processes of the plant, primarily affecting the aesthetic value and long-term health of these tropical shrubs.
The primary hosts are species of Ixora, commonly grown in tropical regions or controlled greenhouse environments. The fungus is host-specific, meaning it thrives primarily on the leaf tissues of these shrubs, although under extreme pressure, it may colonize tender stems if humidity remains persistently high.
Symptoms typically manifest as scattered spots that are initially small and brownish, eventually expanding and turning darker. As the infection progresses, the center of the spot often becomes necrotic, and a diagnostic olive-black fungal growth—consisting of conidiophores and conidia—appears on the leaf surface. Significant defoliation often follows, leading to sparse canopy development.
Development and spread are facilitated by warm temperatures and extended periods of leaf wetness. Pseudocercospora ixorae spores are primarily dispersed by splashing water from rain or overhead irrigation, as well as by air currents within dense plantings where airflow is restricted, leading to high humidity pockets.
Management strategies should focus on eliminating the source of inoculum and modifying the environment.

- Improving spacing to facilitate air movement.
- Applying fungicides when environmental conditions favor disease.
- Avoiding overhead irrigation to keep leaf surfaces dry.

Regular monitoring during high-humidity seasons is essential to detect the infection early and prevent the widespread loss of foliage, ensuring the continued vigor of the ornamental plantings.
