Description

Yellow Sigatoka is a devastating fungal leaf spot disease affecting banana plants worldwide, caused by the ascomycete fungus Pseudocercospora musae. The disease severely compromises the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, leading to significant physiological stress.

The host range is primarily limited to banana plants (genus Musa). The pathogen attacks the foliage at various stages of plant growth, significantly reducing the lifespan of individual leaves, which is detrimental to the development of fruit bunches.

Early symptoms typically appear as small, chlorotic streaks running parallel to the leaf veins. As the disease progresses, these streaks turn into necrotic brown or black lesions, often surrounded by a characteristic yellow halo. Advanced stages involve massive leaf tissue death.

The development of Pseudocercospora musae is highly favored by high humidity, prolonged leaf wetness, and moderate temperatures ranging between 23°C and 28°C. Wind and rain splash act as the primary vectors for conidia dispersal, enabling the rapid spread of the fungus.

Economic damage is caused by reduced photosynthetic activity, resulting in smaller, lighter fruit bunches and premature ripening, which renders the product unmarketable. Effective management strategies involve a combination of rigorous de-leafing, sanitation, strategic fungicide applications, and the implementation of resistant cultivars where possible.
