Description

Yellow Sigatoka is a widespread fungal disease affecting banana plants, caused by the ascomycete fungus Pseudocercospora musicola. It is one of the most economically significant foliage diseases in banana cultivation, capable of reducing yield by up to 50 percent if left untreated.

The disease primarily impacts species and cultivars within the Musa genus. The fungus specifically colonizes the leaves, leading to severe physiological stress that impairs the plant's ability to produce sugars needed for fruit development and cluster filling.

Initial symptoms are characterized by small, pale yellow dots on the underside of the leaves. As the disease progresses, these lesions elongate parallel to the leaf veins, darkening to brown or black, often surrounded by a distinct yellow halo. In advanced stages, large portions of the leaf tissue die prematurely.

The lifecycle of Pseudocercospora musicola is highly dependent on environmental factors. Optimal spread occurs under high relative humidity, frequent rainfall, and temperatures between 25°C and 28°C. The fungus produces conidia which are disseminated via wind, water splashes, and physical contact during plantation management.

Management of Yellow Sigatoka requires a robust integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key practices include systematic deleafing to reduce inoculum pressure, maintaining proper plant spacing to improve airflow, and the timely application of fungicides. Monitoring weather patterns is essential to optimize the timing of chemical control measures.
