Description

The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Pseudocercospora neriella. This organism functions as a parasite on the foliage of its host plant, disrupting physiological processes by damaging leaf tissues. It is a well-known fungal pathogen that affects the health and aesthetic value of ornamental shrubs in warm climates.

The primary host for this pathogen is the common oleander (Nerium oleander). The disease is particularly problematic in landscape gardening and greenhouse production where conditions are managed. While it mainly targets the foliage, in severe cases, the weakened plant may show reduced vigor in the stems and branches as well.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as small, circular, or irregular spots on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots change from light yellow to brown or necrotic dark colors. Under conditions of high humidity, one can observe a distinct dark, velvety fungal growth on the underside of the leaves, which produces spores for further propagation.

Development and spread of the fungus are heavily dependent on moisture. Prolonged leaf wetness, high humidity, and temperatures between 20°C and 28°C create an ideal environment for the production and germination of spores. Water splashes from irrigation or rainfall effectively transport the fungal spores throughout the canopy of the plant.

The damage caused by Pseudocercospora neriella leads to premature defoliation, which causes significant stress to the shrub. Regular management is crucial for control. Recommended measures include:

  • Sanitation: Regularly pruning infected branches and removing all fallen debris.
  • Fungicide application: Using copper-based or systemic fungicides to protect healthy leaves.
  • Cultural practice: Improving air circulation by pruning and avoiding overhead irrigation.
  • Monitoring: Inspecting plants regularly during wet seasons to identify the infection early.
