The disease is caused by the fungus Pseudocercospora pyracanthigena, which specifically infects plants of the genus Pyracantha. It is classified as a foliar fungal disease that disrupts normal plant development.

Typical symptoms involve the appearance of leaf spots that begin as small chlorotic or necrotic lesions.
