Description

Pseudocercospora sawadae is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing leaf spot disease in persimmon trees (Diospyros kaki). It is classified as an anamorphic fungus that specifically targets the foliage, leading to physiological stress and reduced photosynthetic output in the host plants.

This disease primarily affects commercial and ornamental persimmon varieties. While it is rarely lethal to mature trees in a single season, the cumulative effect of annual defoliation significantly weakens the tree, reduces fruit quality, and hampers the plant's ability to tolerate cold winter temperatures.

Symptoms typically appear during the summer months as small, angular spots on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots turn dark brown or black. A key diagnostic feature is the presence of a grayish-colored fungal growth on the underside of the leaves, which produces the conidia necessary for further infection cycles.

The development and spread of Pseudocercospora sawadae are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and frequent rainfall. Splashing rain drops are the primary mechanism for dispersing spores from the soil and leaf litter to the lower canopy, especially when tree density is high and air circulation is poor.

Management of this fungal disease requires an integrated approach to maintain orchard health. Cultural practices include removing and destroying leaf litter to reduce the overwintering inoculum, as well as pruning for better canopy aeration. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate fungicides during the growing season, particularly before the peak of the rainy season, to prevent new infections.
