Description

Pseudocercospora ulei (syn. Microcyclus ulei) is a devastating fungal pathogen that causes South American leaf blight (SALB) in rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis). This fungus is the primary reason why commercial rubber production is extremely challenging in the Amazon basin, the native region of the plant.

The disease exclusively targets rubber species. It is highly specific to young, rapidly expanding tissues, including young leaves, petioles, inflorescences, and fruit. Older, fully hardened leaves are generally resistant to infection, making the timing of the tree's flushing phase critical to its survival.

Symptoms typically begin as small, irregular lesions on the underside of young leaves. As the fungus progresses, these lesions produce abundant conidia and ascospores, appearing as black or olive-colored powder. Heavy infection leads to leaf deformation, necrosis, and premature defoliation, leaving the branches bare and vulnerable to secondary stressors.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of Pseudocercospora ulei. The fungus requires high humidity and frequent rainfall for spore germination and dispersal. Warm temperatures (between 22°C and 28°C) combined with moisture create an environment conducive to rapid epidemic outbreaks, especially during the canopy flushing period.

The economic impact is profound, as repeated defoliation stunts tree growth and drastically reduces latex yield. Current management strategies include:

  • Breeding and planting of genetically resistant Hevea clones.
  • Strategic site selection in regions with distinct, long dry seasons to break the disease cycle.
  • Application of protective fungicides during the critical canopy development phase.
  • Quarantine and strict phytosanitary controls to prevent spread to other rubber-producing continents.
