Pseudochattonella verruculosa is a unicellular microalga from the class Dictyochophyceae that significantly impacts marine aquaculture. While it is not a traditional plant pathogen, it is recognized globally as a harmful algal bloom (HAB) species responsible for severe economic losses in the fish farming industry.
The organism acts through direct ichthyotoxicity. It produces potent toxins that damage the gill epithelium of fish species raised in cages. This physiological damage prevents gas exchange, leading to rapid mortality among captive populations, which is the primary form of economic loss associated with this biological agent.
Symptoms of an outbreak include the discoloration of water to a brownish or murky appearance, often referred to as a "brown tide." In fish farms, the primary indicator is visible respiratory distress among the fish, followed by sudden and widespread mortality that occurs regardless of previous health status.
The development of these blooms is closely linked to oceanographic conditions, particularly during the transition between winter and spring. Stable water stratification combined with nutrient enrichment provides an ideal environment for the rapid division of these cells, leading to bloom concentrations that are hazardous to fish populations.
Mitigation and prevention strategies focus on proactive risk management. Farmers are advised to conduct regular water sampling to identify the presence of the species. When high concentrations are detected, emergency protocols such as moving fish cages to deeper or better-flushed waters, reducing feeding to lower metabolic stress, and installing specialized filtration systems are implemented to minimize potential losses.
